Acai Berry Smoothie

I’d been hearing so much about acai berries for so long and the amazing health benefits of this amazon superfruit — they are high in antioxidants, phytonutrients and attack free radicals like nobody’s business. However, I could only ever find them in a pseudo-fruit-candy-dark-chocolate “acai flavored” form. Delicious? Absolutely? Healthy? Maybe not so much…

A few years ago, Ellie and I went on a family vacation and got hooked on these acai berry smoothies from a smoothie shop at the casino (don’t ask! LOL). They were so yummy, but, again, loaded with sugar and they were probably made using just acai flavoring.

Fast forward to last week and lookie what I found at Better Health!

Real, actual honest-to-god acai berry juice, pure and unsweetened and frozen into these little packets, perfect for my blender!

So today, I decided to make my own acai berry smoothie to rival the taste of the ones from the casino (I am nothing if not a super classy health nut ha ha). So here is my try at it and I have to say it was pretty darn good. It tasted much like a rich sorbet you’d get at a fancy restaurant after dinner. I added maca powder for extra energy and a little raw honey to sweeten without added sugar. (Note: honey is not considered vegan so if you are a vegan, you may want to try some agave nectar or maple syrup) I did try it without adding any extra sweetener and it was good but the extra sweetness is what made this smoothie go from really good to wow! my kid might even drink this!

*Note: You could also make this into a “smoothie bowl” by adding it to a bowl and topping with your favorite fruits, granola or yogurt. 🙂

Instructions
  1. Add all ingredients in your blender and blend at high speed until smooth.
  2. Add water, if needed to thin out.
  3. Pour in your favorite glass and enjoy!

* You could also add this smoothie to a bowl and top with your favorite fruit, granola, nuts, seeds or yogurt!
